The 2010 Charlotte County Open will bring together the finest players from Southwest Florida for a two-day, 36-hole test of golf on two of the area’s most challenging courses. Last year’s tournament was held Oct. 10-11 with Chris Trout winning wire to wire at Rotonda Golf & Country Club’s Long Marsh course and Riverwood Golf Club. Rotonda Long Marsh hosted the tournament for the second time, but a new nine called Pine Valley was used for the first time. Riverwood has been a mainstay of the Open since its inception in 2000. Participants in the 2010 Smuggler’s Charlotte County Open will be played Oct. 16-17 at Kingsway Country Club and Riverwood Golf Club. The Charlotte County Open allows players of all skill levels to compete against golfers of similar skill level in several flights, playing the se course under championship conditions. The quality of our field has been improving each year. The 2008 champion Derek Lamely recently won his first title on the PGA Tour. The tournament’s 2008 winner, Joey Lamielle, went on to qualify for the U.S. Open. In 2007, George McNeill set a tournament record in the first round, but was overtaken on Sunday by Lamely, who set the two-round tournament record with a 133, a mark he surpassed with his 130 in 2008. McNeill took his second-place prize money and proceeded to qualify for the PGA Tour, where he won the 2007 Frys.com Open in his rookie year. Since joining the tour, he has earned more than $4.7 million in prize money. With his victory in the Puerto Rico Open this year, Lamely became the second Charlotte County Open alumnus to notch a PGA Tour win. Through 17 events as of June 14, he has earned $898,975 and ranks 64 in the FedEx Cup standings. |
